Christine Jordan, Women’s Opportunity Award Winner

Central Alberta Soroptimist Club presented this single mother of two with The Women’s Opportunity Award which gives women the chance to make a better life for themselves and their families through increased access to education and better career opportunities – a chance they may not have previously had, or may otherwise have.

Women’s Opportunity Award recipients have faced economic and social barriers and personal hardships that have prevented them from pursuing and achieving their educational and professional goals - until now.

This award is granted to a woman who is the financial head of her household, has dependents and has been accepted to or is attending a vocational/skills training program or undergraduate degree program. Soroptimist International of Central Alberta will grant their winner $2,000.00. The winner may then go on to regional competitions and then possibly federal level competitions in which she may win up to $10,000USD.

This award enables women to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education such as books, childcare or transportation.

Christine Jordan is a single mom of two who lives in Red Deer and is graduating in April with a Business Administration diploma in Marketing. She will then return to school in September to complete her diploma in Accounting and Financial Management. She is a very active member of the Student Council at RDC and is involved with several committees.

Christine’s family has seen their share of hardships. She is lucky to have a very supportive family and friend network to help her out. Her youngest son is critically ill and to date has no diagnosis and Christine had a pacemaker implanted in July 2009, making the small family no strangers to hospital routines. This has limited her studies. However, she has clear cut goals that she will not stray from. She will make concession and simply extend her goal deadline by two years.

Christine eventually plans to start her own business as a Wedding and Special Event Planner upon graduation. Her education and skills will enable her to have a background in marketing as well as give her the ability to bookkeep and manage her own business.

She strives to make a better life for herself and her children and has been described as ‘once she sets her mind to something, she doesn’t stop until she’s accomplished what she’s set out to do!’
